Before you read
What the words in your reading actually mean.
Your reading talks about elements, pillars, stems and a day master as if you already knew them. Most people do not, and reading around the unfamiliar words costs you the argument underneath. Five sections, in the order they build on each other. Ten minutes.
01The Five Elements 五行
Everything else in your reading is built on these five and how they feed and check each other.
These are not substances. They are five ways energy behaves — five stages of a cycle that runs through a season, a day, a project, a person. Your chart is a count of how much of each you were born holding, and the interesting part is almost always what you are missing.
| Element | What it is |
|---|---|
| Wood 木 | Growth, plans, reaching. The impulse to start something and see how far it goes. |
| Fire 火 | Warmth, visibility, expression. What you give off in a room without trying. |
| Earth 土 | Ground, digestion, keeping. The capacity to let an experience settle before moving on. |
| Metal 金 | Edge, structure, judgment. Cutting a thing down to what it actually is. |
| Water 水 | Depth, memory, adaptation. Finding the way around rather than through. |
Read the diagram twice. The solid circle is the generating cycle — Wood feeds Fire, Fire leaves Earth, Earth yields Metal, Metal carries Water, Water grows Wood. The dotted star is the controlling cycle, where each element checks the one it can hold down. A chart with no brakes runs hot; a chart with nothing but brakes never starts.
02The Four Pillars 四柱
Your birth written as four pairs of characters — the thing the whole reading is read from.
Take the year, month, day and hour you were born. Write each one as two characters: a Heavenly Stem above, an Earthly Branch below. That is eight characters in total, which is why the system is called BaZi (八字) — literally “eight characters”. Each pillar covers a different part of a life.
| Pillar | What it covers | When |
|---|---|---|
| Year 年柱 | Roots, ancestry, the family you were handed | Childhood |
| Month 月柱 | The environment you grew in, and your working life | Youth and career |
| Day 日柱 | You yourself — and the branch beneath is the spouse seat | Who you are now |
| Hour 時柱 | What you produce, children, what you leave behind | Later life |
03Yin and Yang 陰陽
Two charts can share an element and behave nothing alike. This is why.
Every element comes in two versions. Yang is the outward, expanding, visible form; Yin is the inward, gathering, quiet one. Same element, opposite temperament — Yang Water is a wave that moves you whether you agreed or not, Yin Water is mist that gets into the room without anyone opening a door. Five elements times two gives the ten Heavenly Stems.
| Stem | Element | Classical image |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia | Yang Wood | A standing tree. Grows straight up and does not bend for you. |
| 乙 Yi | Yin Wood | A vine. Grows around obstacles instead of through them. |
| 丙 Bing | Yang Fire | The sun. Warms everything without choosing who. |
| 丁 Ding | Yin Fire | A candle. Small, steady, and impossible to ignore up close. |
| 戊 Wu | Yang Earth | A mountain. Slow to move and slow to be moved. |
| 己 Ji | Yin Earth | A tilled field. Takes in what is planted and quietly feeds it. |
| 庚 Geng | Yang Metal | Raw ore, an axe. Blunt force that needs shaping. |
| 辛 Xin | Yin Metal | A cut jewel. Refined, particular, easily scratched. |
| 壬 Ren | Yang Water | The ocean. Moves in currents you cannot see the edge of. |
| 癸 Gui | Yin Water | Rain, mist. Gets into everything by seeping, not pushing. |
04The Day Master 日干
One of those eight characters is you. Everything else is read against it.
The stem sitting on top of your day pillar is called the Day Master, and in this system it is not a trait you have — it is you. The self the chart is written about.
This is the single fact that makes a reading personal. The same Metal in two charts means opposite things depending on whose Day Master is looking at it: to a Fire Day Master, Metal is wealth to be worked; to a Wood Day Master, the same Metal is the thing doing the cutting. When your reading says a decade is “draining” or an element is “favorable”, it is always measured from here.
A Day Master can be called strong or weak. That is a weather report, not a verdict — weak means the chart leans on allies, resources and timing rather than raw force. Plenty of formidable lives are built on weak Day Masters.
05Stems and Branches 天干地支
Where the animal signs actually come from — and why you have four of them, not one.
Ten Heavenly Stems (the table above) and twelve Earthly Branches cycle against each other, pairing off into sixty combinations before repeating. Those sixty are the alphabet of the calendar — every year, month, day and hour has one.
Here is the part most people get wrong. The Western shorthand gives you one animal for the whole year — you are a Tiger, or a Rat, and that is the end of it. In a real chart you carry four branches at once: one from the year, one from the month, one from the day and one from the hour, and they argue with each other. Two people born in the same Tiger year with different months and hours are not the same reading, and it is not close.
| Branch | Animal | Hours it rules |
|---|---|---|
| 子 Zi | Rat 쥐 | 23:00–01:00 |
| 丑 Chou | Ox 소 | 01:00–03:00 |
| 寅 Yin | Tiger 호랑이 | 03:00–05:00 |
| 卯 Mao | Rabbit 토끼 | 05:00–07:00 |
| 辰 Chen | Dragon 용 | 07:00–09:00 |
| 巳 Si | Snake 뱀 | 09:00–11:00 |
| 午 Wu | Horse 말 | 11:00–13:00 |
| 未 Wei | Goat 양 | 13:00–15:00 |
| 申 Shen | Monkey 원숭이 | 15:00–17:00 |
| 酉 You | Rooster 닭 | 17:00–19:00 |
| 戌 Xu | Dog 개 | 19:00–21:00 |
| 亥 Hai | Pig 돼지 | 21:00–23:00 |
The hours column is not decoration — it is why your birth time matters. The branch of your hour pillar is read straight off that table, so a birth at 05:10 and one at 04:50 sit in different pillars entirely.
None of this is a belief system you have to sign up to. It is a vocabulary — an old one, worked out carefully, for describing temperament and timing. Knowing it means you can argue with your own reading instead of nodding at it.
